Golf evening Friday 11-Aug-2000

The annual Wilsons Cricket Club golf evening was held at Ramsdale Park Golf Centre, Calverton. 14 members of the club (plus a couple of guests) set out to play the Low Course 18-hole Par-3.

A very pleasant evening (well the weather was fine!) saw Richard Odell lead off with TC, Paul Morley and guest Stephen Hughes. I expected Richard to do well after all the practice he had been doing but the handicap of playing with my even number clubs seemed to hold him back and he didn't score as well as the previous year. Tim had his ups and downs, whilst Paul's cricket bat grip caused him a few problems.

The second four-ball consisted of Steff, Ben, young Stephen and myself. Some brilliant golf was played by all of us at times. I only lost one ball and managed to win the nearest the pin competition on the 10th. (I was all of 18 metres from the pin, but I think I was the only one who ended up on the green!) Steff played well and finished joint winner with a score of 67 - a score which would have been better had he sunk his birdie putt on the 18th. (We all had putts for 2 on the 18th, but not one dropped in.) Stephen is one to watch for the future (both at cricket and golf) and Ben managed to survive 18 holes despite the abject coaching from Steff and I.

The third group consisted of TT, Geoff Pook, Steve Leahy and his workmate (and regular guest) Paul. Like the previous year, Paul scored well and was joint winner with Steff with his 67. Tim and Steve hit some good shots - I particularly remember Tim's tee shot to the 2nd. I'm not sure if he got the putt. Geoff's play improved after a few early wayward shots.

The final group consisted of Richard Taylor, Les, Nigel and the late arriving Justin. (How comes Tim got there early?) Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to witness much of their play, but I understand that Dick was a little disappointed that he didn't sink his putt on the last hole that would have meant he would have gone round in under 100!

We all retired to the 19th hole after our rounds where we sunk a few drinks and enjoyed the bacon baguettes and chips.

The Akhter golf trophy (one I'd won playing with a computer company) was presented to Steff and Paul. They each hold the trophy for 6 months. They also received a packet of golf balls each. (The nearest the pin winner went home with the satisfaction of knowing that he was the most accurate player there!!!) I'll try and get the trophy properly engraved for next year!

Thanks to Richard Odell and Tim Taylor for organising the event. We all had a great time.

Plans for next year are to try and organise 2 evenings. Everybody is welcome.

Alan
