Promotion and Cup Final weekend

Saturday 2-Sep-2000

On the final weekend of the League season, victories for both the 1st team and the 2nds saw them both gaining promotion - congratulations!

The 1st team managed to play a 32-over game on the all-weather surface against Hickling at the Coronation Ground despite the wet and muddy conditions. Batting first, Wilsons were all out for 164 with Ben McKeever top scoring with 69.

Despite below-standard fielding, at least 5 catches were put down, Hickling only managed 144 for 6 off their 32 overs.

The 14 points gained was enough to secure the runners-up spot behind the champions Awsworth who had a comfortable victory over Kinoulton. Shepshed Methodists and Welby were relegated.

The season finished with 9 straight wins.

Sunday 3-Sep-2000

Saw the club involved in the Intermediate Raleigh Cup final against division 1E champions Hucknall Rolls Royce.

The 12:00 start seemed to affect all our top-order batsmen who scored quick runs but the first seven all went early - all to catches! At 86 for 7, with only 17 overs gone, Steve Maxey and Tim Caldwell came together and held the side together to put on 80-odd for the eighth wicket. The final score of 187 all out off 45 overs was far better than we could have hoped for earlier in the day, but looked at least 30 short of a reasonable score.

Rolls Royce started well with the openers putting on over 80 for the 1st wicket. Then gradually RR started losing wickets. Some tight bowling from Steff (who ended up with 3 for 33 off his 9 overs) with help from Sean Bush who took 2 good catches, Paul Morley who held a catch deep on the square leg boundary and Ben McKeever who took a high looping catch as well, put the pressure on RR. The hard-hitting RR captain was smartly stumped by Eric Dalby off the bowling of Steve Maxey, but it was not enough as RR reached their target losing 6 wickets with 6 overs to spare.

Steve Maxey was named "Man of the Match" for his all-round contribution, but the general feeling was that we had not performed anywhere near our full potential. But at least giving the runaway higher division champions a game augurs well for next season.

Back row (left to right): Ben McKeever, Imran Khan, Mark Wallbank, Eric Dalby, Paul Morley, Ray Smithson, Steve Maxey.

Front row (left to right): Sean Bush, Dave Rose, Steffan Boss, Richard Odell, Tim Caldwell.
