1st XI v Awsworth

Saturday 1-May-2004

Wilsons 1st XI (170-5) beat Awsworth 1st XI (91ao) by 71 runs.

Wilsons 1st's completed a resounding victory over old friends and rivals Awsworth to make it two wins out of two for the season. The excellent team effort to beat Lady Bay Boots the week before was replicated even with three changes to the line up. Out went Nabeel (back pap, pap, papping at Uni), Maxey (ankle) and Zak. In came Fizzy, fresh with a new bat accompanied by Tom Wilson and Tim Taylor. They all made vital contributions.

Stef lost the toss (twice in two games) and unsurprisingly was asked to bat first on a dampish wicket which was forecasted to seam. These predictions were to prove true, but Bush and Kish saw off the early overs to build a good platform. This was helped by some inconsistent Awsworth bowling. However, in Martin Yard's first over, Bush attempted to clip one to leg but fell foul of the slow pitch and spooned a caught and bowled. Imran replaced him and set about getting at the bowling. Realising the outfield was slow, he went the airborne route and found the boundary before being caught in the deep for 16.

James Norman entered and set his stall out to stay. He began strongly by pulling a boundary. He then pulled his hamstring, thereby doubling his pulling efforts for the last few months. Although he lost Kish at the other end who had batted resolutely for 28, Norman continued to bat well. Stef entered and developed a innings saving partnership before James was fell for 37. TC added 25 spicy runs and Stef opened arms including one huge straight six, no mean feat on the slow green pitch.

Wilsons finished on 170 for 5, with Stef and Norman sharing top scored of 37. The total was 20 or 30 more then we believed to be par. A feature of the late surge in runs was excellent running between Stef and TC, and latterly TC and Tom Wilson.

After a make shift tea which included sandwiches bought from shops various, Ifty's home made fruit feast and Rosey's leftovers from a drunken sandwich making feast the night before, Wilsons huddled in the middle and Captain Boss laid down the instructions. "Keep it tight, bowl in the right channels". The opening pair of TC and Rose seemed not to listen....

TC started with a maiden, but struggled with line and length due to the damp wicket. Rose started even worse with 3 wides. TC continued to bowl too short, and was replaced by Ifty. At the other end, Rose began to slot into a line and length on a wicket which offered some spit and seam. In a 10 over spell, he worked his way through the top order picking up 5 wickets in the process. The first was a caught and bowled which defied bodily form and weight. TT demonstrated this too with the important wicket of Yard at long off to give Rose his 5-fer. It was a marvellous diving catch.

At the other end, Ifty bowled tightly with no reward but built all important pressure. No other wicket came though, Imran and TT both trying valiantly to get into the lower order. Stef switch his bowlers intelligently and Kish, who was only on to ensure Imran and TT could change ends strangled holded the Awsworth batsman into pulling a long hop straight into the grateful arms of Rose at Deep Mid Wicket. Imran and TC came back on and bowled spin, with emphatic results. TC claimed two scalps and Imran got in the act with a run out and the last wicket of the game.

An all round excellent victory. Onto Wymswold next Sat with the hope of some sun and another Wilsons' victory. Currently we sit joint third in the table.
