SNCL Division C/D
1st XI v Kirkby Portland
Wilsons 1st XI journeyed to Kirkby Portland on Saturday for a clash of two
undefeated teams at the top of C/D. Wilsons won the toss and Stefan Boss
was happy to bat on what looked like a good pitch.
Sean Bush and Steve Maxey provided a solid base to the Wilsons innings as they both accumulated effectively and drove down the powerfully ground. They were both dismissed in quick succession however and the were rapidly followed by James Norman and Imran Khan. Wilsons were now placed somewhat precariously at 65-4 at just the time they were looking to push on.
Boss and Tim Caldwell began to build a partnership before Stefan was dismissed by the nagging Caunt. Caldwell then continued to rebuild ably assisted by Tom Wilson. 17-year old Wilson took 11 from one over as he made an assured and valuable 25. Caldwell was eventually dismissed as he looked to hit a six over the ground's longest boundary and was safely pouched by a tumbling Portland fielder. Jamie Bowns was making his debut for the first team and his straight six from the final ball of the innings took Wilsons to 171-8.
Kirkby Portland were clearly confident of knocking off the required runs on what proved to be a fine wicket. Caldwell opened the attack for Wilsons and was in miserly mood, conceding just nine from his opening five over spell.
It was Iftikar Ahmed however who made the opening breakthroughs, continuing his fine form with the ball. Steve Maxey replaced Iftikar and soon was turning the ball markedly. He drew an errant drive from the Portland No. 4 who was smartly stumped by the impressive Briggs, who is making the first team gauntlets his own. Maxey then picked up two further wickets thanks to a well judged catch by Wilson and a dragged-on pull shot. Imran Khan then showed his undoubted ability as he ripped through the middle order taking 4-11 from seven overs, all his wickets were bowled, including the key wicket of Caunt. Maxey wrapped up the victory as he claimed his fourth wicket from a top-edged sweep.
Wilsons had dismissed an impressive Portland side for only 94. An outstanding by effort by all of the bowlers, who were fantastically supported by an effervescent fielding display. This was Wilsons' fourth straight win of the season and sets up perfectly the visit of Kimberly IIs to the Coronation Ground next week.
