2nd XI v Stanton

Saturday 22-May-2004

Wilsons II 161-9 (6 points) lost to Stanton 162-9 (18 points) by 1 wicket

6 wickets for Mark but 2nds on wrong end of yet another close match as they suffer 1st defeat of the season

After losing the toss for a 3rd successive week Wilsons were invited to bat on a wicket that promised plenty of runs.

The first over bowled by Fletcher brought instant reward as Jeff Moore fell to an outstanding catch at slip without troubling the scorers. Dave and Ray soon got on top of the bowling and they patiently took the score along at around 3 runs per over. With drinks in sight and the score 70-1 Dave was bowled by Hose for 19 and drinks were taken.

Immediately after Ray had an altercation with a spectator he foolishly tried to slog his frustration away and was caught off a big heave at slip and suddenly we were 73-3. Fizzy and Mark were the two new batsmen and just 6 runs later Fiz played a shot he'll want to forget and now we were stuggling as 70-1 had become 79-4 in the space of just 3 overs.

Nigel joined Mark and together they added 36 before Mark was caught at deep mid-on trying to repeat his heroics in the Awsworth game. His knock of 22 came in rapid time was much needed but it required someone to knuckle down and see the innings through. Further wickets fell as Nigel was caught for 11, Nadeem caught for 6 and Tom Moore bowled for 2 as we slumped to 129-8.

This left Andy Call to join Geoff Pook and they steadied the ship to take the score to 140 before Geoff was bowled for 2. Les and Andy scraped the score along to 161-9 with some sensible rearguard batting to give us 3 bonus points, but in all honesty this was 20-30 runs short of what we could have expected on that wicket.

Andy and Nadeem opened the bowling and Nadeem struck straight away finding an edge for Les to make a simple catch and remove opener Cufflin for a duck. This brought together 2 left-handers who grafted the score to 47 before Mark struck by bowling Towndow for 20. Tom Moore, having his first bowl of the season, found an edge off Marshall for Les to make a spectacular catch leaving Stanton 48-3. Things got better the next over as Mark tempted Sanderson who got himself stumped for a duck and Stanton were reeling at 51-4.

Another change of bowling brought reward as Nadeem returned and bowled Ghislanzone for 3 - Stanton 64-5. However, at this point with Wilsons looking favourites Stanton captain Henshaw joined Hose and together they set about the bowling. A stand of 66 came in 10 overs with good batting but helped by a succession of wide balls and some chest high no balls. With the match rapidly running away Mark returned from the top end and immediately had Hose caught in the deep with an excellent catch by Tom. Two overs later Mark had a double strike and a six wicket haul as Pointing and Cope both fell LBW.

At 140-9 young opening bowler Fletcher joined skipper Henshaw with 22 still needed. Frustration set in as the number 11 played and missed repeatedly but when the bowlers got the ball on the stumps he managed to hit it. Confidence was disappearing as the score crept ever closer and the chance to finish them off never materialised as Fletcher smacked the winning 4 past Andy's foot and left us losing a close game by 1 wicket.
