SNCL Division N
2nd XI v Newstead Abbey & Village III
Newstead Abbey & Vill III 181-3 (18 points) beat Wilsons II 177-6 (4 points) by 7 wickets
Ray's 43 and Jamie's 39 not enough to beat Newstead
Wilsons welcomed back Mehtab for his first outing of the season for the trip to Newstead village where the ground looked good but the track appeared a bit suspect. Les won his first toss of the season and elected to bat hoping that the pitch would get worse with wear.
Ray and Dave got off to a steady start until Dave was bowled by Bentley. Mehtab soon picked up his good form of last season and the scoring rate increased. However, with the score on 75 Mehtab was caught for 28 scoed in brisk fashion. Jamie and Ray proceeded to punish anything loose and brought up the hundred before Ray got out in the 40's again dragging on.
Fiz batting at five was bowled trying to use Vasim's railway sleeper and Jamie was stumped for 39 with a maiden 50 in sight. Mark was out to an outstanding one handed catch at deep point to leave Vasim and Tim to complete the final 4 overs scoring at 10 per over. Our final score of 177-6 in 40 overs should have been plenty - but time would tell.
Tim and Vasim opened the bowling with TT being very economical in his first spell conceding only 12 runs in 5 overs. The batsmen played and missed on numerous occasions and when the ball did find the edge it did not carry, bouncing at least once before reaching the wicket keeper.
Vasim gave way to Andy who bowled Newstead skipper Bentley for 22 with the score on 38 in his 3rd over. Bullock and Collins took advantage of some outrageous luck as ball after ball took the varnish off the stumps and edges flew over slip and gully. However the longer they lasted the better they became and they brought up the hundred in the 25th over - well on target.
As our bowling was tiring Mark struck a double blow having Bullock caught by Andy for 39 and clean bowling Thakrar for a golden chumley. New batsman Muzeja joined Collins and both adopted the long handle approach. The luck was again with the hosts as a combination of big hits was supplemented by good fortune as catches were not taken and a string of edges flew to safety.
Our situation was not helped by the odd wayward delivery and poor wicket keeping that let through too many byes on a poor wicket. Newstead hit the winning runs with 3 overs to spare in what can only be described as a real kick up the pants for a very strong Wilsons XI.
