1st XI v Nuthall

Saturday 12-June-2004

Wilsons (137 for 2) beat Nuthall (136 a.o) by 8 wickets.

Another Saturday, another 20 points for Wilsons, who completed a resounding victory over Nuthall.

Following from good victories against good quality opposition in the last few weeks, the same mental approach had to be applied without showing complacency. This was hammered home by skipper Boss as we took the field, the only time this season we have done so first.

There were a few changes from last week’s side as Nibs came back from pap, pap, papping in Wales to take the place of Jamie. Also back was Zak, making way for Methab who had an engagement with his chimney.

Rose and TC opened with the new cherry in conditions which where conducive to swing. Rose found it immediately and two wickets came in his first over. The first was an out-swinger that caught the edge and Stef took a good catch down low at second slip. Off the final ball of the over, Rose shaped the ball into the left handed and cleaned up the opener.

TC was bowling well from the other end and was beating the bat with great regularity but for no reward (not for the first time this season). It was Rose who struck again in the 6th over, bowling the Nuthall batsman who played round a straight one.

Imran and Ifty then replaced TC and Rose. Again Ifty was a model of control whilst Imran toiled away. The Nuthall partnership was playing well though, hitting the odd bad ball for boundaries as well as inventing shots over the infield. It was Ifty who got a deserved breakthrough though bowling the belligerent Nuthall batsman. Ifty struck a double blow when he induced the number 3 batsman into driving to TC at mid-off who caught it in his belly.

Maxey replaced Imran as Wilsons tried to breakthrough the tail of Nuthall but they put up some dogged resistance. Rose replaced the tiring Ifty and immediately got his fourth wicket, Ifty taken a great catch at mid-off. Rose than got his fifth wicket with Zak taken an easy catch behind the stumps.

Imran and Maxey finished off the innings, with Tom Wilson contributing with great run and throw to run out the number 9 batsman. The innings ended on 136 all out.

Wilsons now how to prove they could chase a target and although the pitch was dry and the weather good it still needed to be done professionally. Enter Bush and Khan who immediately stamped their authority on the innings. Khan in particular again showing his undoubted class with the bat. He took no time in dispatching the opening bowlers for boundaries. Bush played magnificently at the other end, keeping the scoreboard ticking and punishing the bad balls himself, especially some wonderfully timed clips off his legs.

In was a shame Imran could not carry his innings to the end but he holed out after making a wonderful 79. Kish came in a played a couple of good shots before he was cleaned up.

It was left to Stef to hit the winning runs through cover, Bush keeping his wicket for 36 not out.

Again the side showed exceptional team spirit. It was all agreed that fielding first felt different, but we came through it like we have done all season. Next week it’s Keyworth and although last season saw us bowling them out for 26, they are riding high in the division.
