SNCL Division N
2nd XI v Lambley II
Lambley II 90 (3 points) lost to Wilsons II 227-9 (20 points) by 137 runs
The day at Lambley started in the same old fashion . We fancied a bowl first on a drying wicket but as usual skipper Les Hardy lost the toss and we were invited to bat. With odds of 50-50 quite clearly only winning 4 out of 21 attempts is rapidly becoming a joke and a new caller must be paramount to further success!
Ray Smoithson and Dave Nattrass opened the batting and pushed on at about 4 an over and the 50 came up in the 13th over. A mix up in the calling led to Dave being run out for 22 and Ray soon followed, caught behind for 23.
James Norman, playing his first game for the 2nds this year, made a steady start as did Jamie Bowns before they picked up the rate and the hundred arrived in the 25th over. This was the perfect platform to build from for the last 20 overs and the scoring duly accelerated. Jamie eventually got out to a lollipop to square leg for 30 and then James played all around around a straight one just 3 runs short of a well deserved 50.
The carnage continued with Mark Wallbank and Fiz Ahmed as boundaries flowed to all parts of the ground, until with the score on 199, Fizzy was out LBW for 31. In the final few overs the score raced along until Nadeem Ghani was caught off a skier and Mark was stumped for a chancy 36. Tim Taylor and Vasim Choudhary were out at the end but a score of 227-9 looked way too many for our under-strength opponents.
Tim Taylor opened the bowling with Nadeem and both bowlers settled in to a good line and length. Nadeem had the wind at his back and fire in his belly. (Was it the curry from the night before? Ed.) It was no surprise when Nadeem got the breakthrough with the aid of a smart catch at cover by a rejuvenated Fizzy. Tim was bowling into a fierce wind but his accuracy paid off as he bowled the next two batsmen for 3 and 0 leaving the hosts 23-3.
With the score on 36 opening bat Shaw was out LBW to Tim for 24 and all hope disappeared for the home team. Nadeem was very unlucky in his last over, apparently finding the edge to Ray but was given not out. Daoud Ali replaced Nadeem and promptly bowled Brough for 9. In his next over the batsmen who had escaped in Nadeem's last over hooked Daoud to deep square leg where James Norman took a spectacular catch.
Tim was bowling through uninterrupted from the bottom end and he clean bowled Bowles for 0 before assisting in the run out of youngster Barfield with the aid of good work form Dave. This brought in last man Skerrit and after a couple of lusty blows he plopped a catch to Les Hardy to give Tim a well deserved 5 wicket haul.
Our performance was ruthless with the opposition bowled out in 21 overs for 69 runs giving us a 20 point maximum and 11 smiles. We will obviously have harder games but at the moment we are playing well and as our younger players gain more experience we will be hoping for a bigger improvement
