2nd XI v Long Whatton II

Saturday 19-June-2004

Long Whatton II 87 (4 points) lost to Wilsons II 140 (18 points) by 53 runs

Jamie Bowns 35
Tim Taylor 5-41

Yet again we found ourselves playing away (where is our home ground?) and arrived at the pictureque gound of Long Whatton full of confidence after 3 successive wins. Les Hardy won the toss (5th time in 22 attempts!) and the shock was audible. After coming round we decided to bat, although Les would have gladly have lost it as he didn't have a clue ht to do!

It probably shipwrecked Les's judgement as the perennial number 11 decided to open the batting with Dave Nattrass. Unfortunately Dave got a beast of a ball in the first over - nipping back miles to clip the bails leaving us 1 for 1. Geoff Pook joined Les and possibly the heady heights of numbers 2 and 3 galvanised the two "trainees" from their normal slothesome rate of scoring and both set about building the innings at a rate of respectability.

The first 10 overs yielded 40 runs from a mixture of sensible batting and hare-like running (ahumm!!). However, a change of bowling brought instant reward as Geoff was caught at cover after a good knock. Fizzy entered the fray remembering that the last time he batted with Les there was a senseless run out. Unfortunately the record was kept intact as Les stupidly ran himself out backing up too far at the non-striker's end.

Jamie Bowns had an early scare being dropped in the covers and this proved very costly for the hosts. Fizzy was out LBW and wickets began to tumble. Mark Wallbank was caught given a shot too much air and then Nigel Smith fell to a good catch and the early promise was beginning to fade. Jamie Bowns was seventh out having scored 35 and Nadeem Ghani soon followed leaving us 8 down with 9 overs remaining. Tim Taylor batting at 10 (which idiot sorts out the batting order???) creamed two lovely fours before top edging to square leg and we were now 9 down with still 8 overs to go. Vasim and Andy Call batted sensibly and put on 26 for the last wicket as our final score limped to 140 all out in the 44th over - just 2 batting points.

Nadeem got into the Long Whatton batsmen straightaway and clean bowled both openers without them scoring a run. Number 3 was throwing the bat at everything and had a few lives until Nigel took a smart catch at cover to give TT his first wicket. His second wasn't long in coming either as Lester played on for 2.

Freer was next man in and immediately put the ball over the long-on boundary. A repeat of the same shot brought a field change with Andy and Jamie guarding the boundary hoping for a catch. Freer duly obliged as Tim took his 3rd wicket with the aid of a good catch from Andy just yards inside the rope. Cowley fell to a juggling catch from Dave at deep gulley and suddenely TT was eyeing a 5-for. The home skipper Trigg tried to clear the long-off rope only to find the safe hands of Jamie and Tim had his 5th wicket, just reward for 12 hard overs bowled into the wind. Tim's 5-41 included all the middle order - numbers 3 to 7.

Mark clean bowled numbers 8 and 9 and the einnings was polished off by some good work from Andy who ran out the number 10 who was trying to pinch the strike.

The hosts were all out for 87 giving us a win by 53 runs and 18 points.
