2nd XI v Beeston II

Saturday 26-June-2004

Wilsons II 160-8 (19 points) beat Beeston II 131-8 (6 points) by 29 runs

Due to the morning rain the start of the game was delayed. The pitch looked a little damp on the surface but the outfield was remarkably dry. Les Hardy and Beeston stand-in skipper Phil Fullwood decided to play a 36 over per side which looked a little ambitious with the overhead conditions. [On the adjacent pitch Gedling & Sherwood II had already started playing Lady Bay Boots II in a 25 over game.]

Les lost the toss (again) and unsurprisingly was asked to bat first. Dave and Ray opened and both looked in little trouble against the seam bowling of Martin Huffer and the younger Fullwood. But it didn't last long as first Dave picked out the outstanding fielder Saville then Ray pushed back a simple catch to the bowler Huffer.

Mehtab and Mark then slowly pulled the innings together and took the score to 74 before Mark fell to another catch by Saville having scored 26. Mehtab continued with the help of Vasim before Mehtab played all around a straight ball and Vasim was picked up in the gully by Huffer. With Les out plumb LBW to Huffer and Fiz and Nadeem out caught (and guess by whom - Mr Saville) Wilsons were struggling at 117-8 with plenty of overs still to go. But an excellent partnership was put on by Daoud Ali and Phil Herd who added 43 unbeaten runs as conditions got worse and the rain began to fall yet again.

Tea was taken just before 5 o'clock as the rain continued to pour down. Under umbrellas we watched as Sherwood continued to bat through the rain and pulled off a magnificent victory in the last over. Meanwhile we pondered what to do. Eventually the rain stopped and it was decided to make a start. Nadeem and Andy opened but we were only in the 4th over when the heavens opened and an unintentional beamer from Andy with the slippery ball caused the umpires to retreat to the clubhouse again

After half-an-hour it stopped and the sun even poked through. The pitch and outfield were fine but the bowler's footmarks were very slippery. Nadeem was taken out of the attack to be replaced by Mark and Andy was forced to bowl off a short run up, severely limiting his penetration. Beeston wicket-keeper James was finding his range with a series of shots to leg as they put on 54 for the first wicket before Fiz took a spectacular, tumbling catch on the deep square boundary to remove Hamilton. Just a few balls later Fiz had the easiest of chances fielding at square leg to remove Fullwood but he put this one down at the 3rd attempt - how the mighty do fall!

The big breakthrough came from Mark when he clean bowled James for 41 then had Fullwood caught behind off a thin edge by Ray. Brooks scored 15 as Beeston reached the half way point of their innings on 78-3 - well up with the scoring rate. But then Mehtab followed up his top score 36 with the bat with 3 wickets and Vasim picked up the younger Fullwood LBW as Beeston went to 110-8. (3 wickets falling with the score on 106.)

A flourish at the end by Azam very ably supported by a stylish 12 year old Asif Iqbal with an excellent future, saw Beeston get to 131-8, preventing Wilsons picking up the full 20 points.
