SNCL Division C

1st XI v Thrumpton

Saturday 11-June-2005

We won the return game v. Thrumpton who had beaten us heavily at their ground earlier in the season. The clouds threatened for most of the game and the conditions were overcast throughout.

A tremendous bowling and fielding performance by Wilsons (who won the toss) limited Thrumpton to just 162 all out in the final over of their innings. The conditions were conducive to Rose's opening swing bowling and Caldwell was also generating some shape in the air. Imran, bowling leg spin this week, took 5-27 and Tim Caldwell took 4-26.

Returning to the team from University, both Tom Wilson and Nabeel Sayeed came into the side. Nabeel opened Wilsons' batting response with the impressive Mehtab Ahmed. The two put on a quickfire 56 for the first wicket in no time at all. Nabeel, who went on to make an excellent 70 in tough conditions, was ably supported by Imran Khan (24) and when Thrumpton began to sense a batting collapse later on as Khan and Syed were removed, it was left to some lusty blows from Jamie Bowns (16 not out) and hard grafting by skipper Caldwell (13 not out) to take Wilsons past their target with 12 overs to spare.

Next week Wilsons 1st XI are away at West Bridgfordians who lost their 100% record at the weekend when they lost at home to Keyworth.

TC

and more from Dave (stuttering run up) Rose ....

Wilsons 164-5 beat Thrumpton (161ao) by 5 wkts.

Wilsons recorded the second successive victory in Division C, beating Thrumpton by 5 wkts.

With Kish and Zak unavailable due to work and beer commitments (guess which one is which) the 1’s welcomed the return of Nabeel and Tom Wilson. Both have returned from university looking none the wiser from when they arrived, save how to eat a kebab without spilling chilli sauce down their shirt and how to acquire tight fitting cricket shirts.

Acting skipper Tim Caldwell again won the toss and elected to bowl first on a day where there was enough humidity to induce swing. Rose and Caldwell started and begun to tie the batsmen down with a tight line and length. Rose stuttered through 7 wicket less overs, conceding just 17 runs before being replaced by Ifty. At the other end Caldwell was bowling well and deserved his first wicket, knocking over the middle stump of the Thrumpton opener.

The two left handers of Thrumpton then preceded to put on a good stand, although Ifty was desperately unlucky not to claim the scalp of Steve Weightman, who edge the ball twice between Bush and Nibs.

Tim Taylor, replacing TC eventually got the breakthrough bowling the other Thrumpton opener.

The turning point came though when Imran came on for Tim, bowling his leg spin due to an injury to his knee.

Imran span, whirled and googled his way through the middle and late order picking up 5 well deserved wickets, including an absolute beauty to get rid of Andy Pick. From the other end, TC came back to replace Ifty and picked up 3 more wickets, including the dangerous Steve Weightman with a beautiful slower ball.

In all it was an excellent bowling and fielding performance with a target we all felt achievable.

Mehtab and Nabeel went out to open and put on a 50+ stand which was massively important to the outcome of the game. It meant we had runs on the board with wickets in hand and gave the team the confidence to attack the bowling. Mehtab was eventually caught and bowled for a well made 25, and two balls later Andy Barker was back in the dressing room having being adjudged LBW.

This brought Imran to the crease and he immediately set the right attacking tones, unfazed by the bowling of Andy Pick. Honours were about even in this duel when Andy bowled Imran, the ball diverting onto the stumps via his pads.

At the other end, Nabeel was making things look sublimely easy and he moved to a hugely deserved 50 and milked the applause from the boundary. Bush, who came in for Imran looked to be unfortunate to be adjudged LBW for the second week running. Bush has done a marvellous job this season keeping wicket and batting in the top order and runs with no doubt come very soon for the technically gifted batsmen.

Jamie Bownes, freed from his defensive duties came in and played the way he knows how. He and Nibs brought the game to the brink of victory before Nibs, on 72 danced down the wicket and was stumped.

It was left to Jamie and TC to score the runs needed for an excellent victory and provide the momentum for our push up the league.
