Wilsons v Long Whatton

SNCL division D

Home– 5 July 2008

A brief summary of the game from skipper Zak Briggs.

Captain Zak Briggs won his 6th toss out of 8 on a nice sunny afternoon and decided to have a bat. This decision looked questionable early on as the Long Whatton opening bowlers got a fair bit of life out of a pitch which still had some moisture from the overnight rain. However the top order battled hard with Nabil Syeed and Tim Caldwell both scoring 37 and with 6 overs left and the score at 132-5 it looked like a total of 170 was on the cards. Unfortunately the traditional Wilsons' collapse was never too far away and the last 5 wickets fell for 12 runs leaving 15 balls unused. The total of 144 was probably 30 short and would require a good performance to defend it.

The response started well with TC taking a wicket in the first over with Doud following up with one in the 6th. This was followed by the excitement of a gust of wind that blew over one of the sight screens and a very heavy shower.

Returning to bright sunshine Long Whatton made steady progress with Platts (20) Vellacot (16) and Foster (26) all threatening to take the game away but getting out at crucial times. The Wilsons fielding was sharp and backed up a good bowling performance but with Whatton requiring less than 50 with 5 wickets left the game was in the balance.

The game swang Wilsons way when Nadeem Ghani dismissed Pettit which was followed by a brilliant run out from Aimer Khan. Caldwell came back into the attack and dismissed the dangerous Trigg for 9. This left Ghani to remove the last man to record a 14 run victory.

An excellent fielding performance backed up by good bowling which earnt a tough victory. However as was pointed out at the skipper at the end it would have been so much more comfortable had the team batted its overs.
