Willoughby on the Wolds v Wilsons

SNCL division D

Away – 12 July 2008

A brief summary of the game from skipper Zak Briggs.

The day did not start to well for the skipper with the AA being responsible for some abysmal directions to Platt Lane, Keyworth. On finally arriving on a sodden ground the prospects were not great, however the square drained well and a 40 over match was agreed.

After losing the toss and being inserted, Wilsons initially struggled against tight bowling from Newton, Boot and Mahmood. At 43-4 after 22 overs the innings was in the balance. However a patient knock from Tom Moore (38) in 35 overs provided the sort of stability that Wilsons innings have often lacked and allowed Briggs (26) and Caldwell (29) to take advantage of some lose fielding and move the score on to 136-7 off 39 overs. At this point Imran Shahid decided to make it look all to easy by smashing 20 off the last 4 balls, a total of 157-8 looked a good one at tea as the wicket had appeared to cut up somewhat.

However upon the restart the wicket became very unresponsive for the opening bowlers and the fielding at best mediocre. Tim Caldwell managed to remove Smith (21) but with a couple of straight forward chances going down Willoughby cruised past 100 with 9 wickets in hand and there looked no way back.

The game changed when the ever talismanic Imran Khan removed Lindley (42) which was followed up with Nadeem Ghani removing the dangerous Boot and Johnson in the following over. All of a sudden the fielding side woke up and we started playing with passion. As the run rate increased Ghani and Khan kept the pressure on the batsman, catches where now taken and runs were saved in the field and the home side subsided to 147-8 at the close although 8 runs where taken off the final 2 balls to sum up a very up and down day.

In many ways a fortunate win brought about by good sensible batting and tremendous bowling particuarly from Ghani at the death who took 6-37. However for promotion to be achieved we need to learn quickly to play the full match, not just in parts.
