Welcome
to the Wilsons Cricket Club web site. Wilsons are a friendly club
who have a new ground on the outskirts of Nottingham. Home fixtures
are played at the Regatta Way Sports
Ground, Gamston which is on the road towards the National
Watersports Centre, Holme Pierrepont. (The Sports Ground is shared
with Gedling&Sherwood CC and West Bridgford Colts FC.) The
clubs moved to this new, purpose built ground off Regatta Way,
Gamston in July, 2007 after several years playing at the Coronation
Ground, off Wilford Lane.
Wilsons
CC have two sides that play on Saturdays in the Gunn
& Moore South Nottinghamshire Cricket League. Both sides
have moved up through the leagues with both 1st XI and 2nd XI
sides gaining promotion in 2000.
2001 saw the 1st XI gain further
promotion and they played in Division 1D during 2002.
2003 saw further success with
the 2nd XI winning division 2F.
In
2004 the league structure was altered to merge the previously
separate 1st and 2nd team divisions. The 1st XI were initially
put in a 20 team league in which they finished in the top half
(only dropping from the promotion places in the last week of the
season). The 2nd XI were placed in division M.
Having
started 2005 well, the 1sts fell away and were relegated from
division C (but only because 2 teams came down from the Premier
League).
For
2007, the 1st XI are playing in division D again having narrowly
missed promotion last season. The second team are in Division
M. The SNCL is a 45 overs a side, result league that forms part
of the Nottinghamshire pyramid. Games commence at 1.30pm.
In
2000, whilst playing in division 1F, a new
record score for the club was achieved, and the club got to
the final of the Rayleigh Cup where
we were unfortunate to lose to the champions of division 1E. In
2001, we lost to the eventual winners in the semi-final.
On
Sundays, the club play friendly fixtures against old 'rivals'
such at Snibston from Leics., touring sides and other local club
sides that we would not normally play in League fixtures. These
games are played over 40 overs and commence at 2.30pm. The Club
uses these fixtures to give a game to those members who may have
missed selection on a Saturday, junior players plus a mixture
of 1st and 2nd team players.
Wilsons
also participate in the Nottingham Evening League. These fixtures
are played as 15 x 8 ball overs and usually start at 6pm in the
summer months. Wilsons are currently in division 1. In 2003 we
won division 2 and were successful in the shield final.
For
the last few years the club has gone on tour - Newcastle
(2004), Oxford (2005) and
Bournemouth
(2006).
Wilsons
have several junior players in the club. Although the club have
not entered any junior leagues this season, junior friendly matches
can be organised with other local sides. These games take place
during the week and commence at 6pm. To try and boost the number
of young players at the club, some of our qualified coaches will
be looking to run coaching sessions at local primary schools,
and a series of morning sessions at the club, leading to a award
scheme.
Wilsons
CC was established in 1935 and in 1985 celebrated its Golden Jubilee.
The current secretary Richard Taylor wrote
then "Wilsons has survived the transition from a 'works
team' to an independent club and thrived on it. It is a club which
has never owned its own ground nor had more than one team at a
time, and it is a club which still succeeds in turning out eleven
players on a summer afternoon who enjoy playing cricket with a
friendly club." Things have changed, but we still "turn
out eleven players on a summer afternoon who enjoy playing cricket
with a friendly club."
If
you are interested in local cricket and would like to play, watch,
umpire, help with the juniors, make the teas, etc., then please
contact our Hon. Secretary, Richard Taylor (0115) 9288627 or e-mail
us at enquiries@wilsonscc.co.uk.
We will be very pleased to hear from you.
