Wilsons Cricket Club celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1985. The current Hon Secretary, Richard Taylor wrote a brief history of the club that was included in the Golden Jubilee celebration dinner programme that was held on Tuesday 15th October 1985 at the Andrew Suite, Royal Hotel, Wollaton Street, Nottingham. More information taken from that programme (including club records at that time) can be seen here.
The Club Badge
The new badge was specially "commissioned" for the Jubilee Celebration.
The College of Arms provided two separate Coats of Arms for the Wilsons of English origin and one of these was selected by the Committee and adapted to give the club its own unique variation.
The name Wilson is derived from son of William and orginated from the German Wil'helm - lieral translation "with helmet".
Description of the original arms was "per pale argent and azure three lions gambs erased lesswise in pale counterchanged". In simple English this means, "three lions' forelegs placed lengthwise, counterchanged in silver and blue".
A lion's head crest to the arms existed on the original, but was deleted to simplify the design. The final adaption was to change the blue and silver to the club colours of green and gold, thus giving a simple two colour badge.
The original motto was not really suitable and so a new one "Spectemur Agendo" was selected. This translated means, "Let us be judged by our actions" and is borne by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and the councils of both Barnsley and the London Borough of Lambeth.
The research into both the "Arms" and mottoes was undertaken by Stephen Leahy.
